Fry And Laurie Kick Ass!

How would you like to hear a bit of British musical satire? You may be amused by this parodic view of certain American attitudes:

Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (long before “House”) were a comedic team for several years, and I think they were brilliant. If you ever have a chance to see their version of P.G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves stories go for it — unless you don’t like British humor, which for some is an acquired taste.

Saw this first on Cuttle’s board and laughed myself silly. Sadly, I was paying more attention to the words at the time and I did not figure out who the participants actually were. What a surprise! Since you I’D them.. You get the poem. 🙂

    Ode to Hugh

I’m am really in love with Hugh Laurie
As the scruffily gruffish mad doc.
    He’s outrageous with matters contagious
And there’s nothing that he cannot mock.

I am really in love with Hugh Laurie
    Mid American accent and all.
    And I simmer with anticipation
For his series renewal each fall.

I am really in love with Hugh Laurie
As effete counterpart to his Jeeves.
His public school accent is charming
Though his antics are Jeeve’s pet peeves.

I’m really in love with Hugh Laurie.
As a hillbilly singer he rocks.
And his good ol boy impersonation
Is one that just knocks off my socks.

I am really in love with Hugh Laurie
It’s like lusting for 3 different guys
Whether packaged in shaggy chic shirttails,
Or coattails or bolo string ties.

  2. The anonymous Cuttlefish is truly our modern master of light verse. He or she consistently “nails it”; sometimes rhymed quatrains can take the sting out what would otherwise be depressing news.

All very true, Larry. But though flattering to me, this was not his verse. It was mine. I seriously doubt that Cuttle has a crush on Hugh Laurie.. while I myself…. . (grin) This one was inspired by you, since you not only ID’d the duo so that even I in my dim sleep deprived condition could make the connection but you went on to talk of their comedic team about which I previously knew nothing.
BTW Cuttle has lately joined Freethoughts blog where you can get a huge dollop of freethinking and outspoken people all ‘cuttled’ together in one convenient spot. The Atheist Camel, however still roams on his own, and has some really sharpish essays up lately.

  4. I knew it was your verse, Joan, and it’s a fine one. I just used your comment as a springboard to comment about the versifying cephalopod.

Just saw Hugh Laurie On GMA this A.M. a clip from what appears to be his band, playing blues..and he was on the piano. Ok comedian, actor, singer, guitar player, piano player, Now I’m just waiting for his paintings. (grin)
